CONWAY, Ark. — In a heartbreaking update to the community, the Conway Police Department held a press conference on Tuesday, April 15, revealing critical new information about the devastating mass shooting that occurred just two days earlier at 5th Avenue Park. The incident, which has left the city reeling, claimed the lives of 24-year-old Tatayana Penister of England, Arkansas, and 23-year-old Demetrius Feemster of Little Rock. An additional nine individuals were injured in the sudden burst of gunfire that erupted during what was initially a peaceful gathering.
According to Conway Police Chief Chris Harris, the shooting took place on the evening of Sunday, April 13, during a community event held at the park. Witnesses report that the park was filled with families, children, and groups of friends enjoying the spring weather when gunfire suddenly rang out, sending people running in panic and chaos.
“There’s no question this was a senseless act of violence,” Chief Harris said. “What should have been a peaceful evening of community fellowship turned into a nightmare that will be remembered for years.”
The shooting has left the community in mourning, with candlelight vigils and memorials already being planned in honor of Penister and Feemster. Police have not yet confirmed how many shooters were involved, but investigators are working tirelessly to review surveillance footage, gather forensic evidence, and speak to witnesses.
Chief Harris emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that authorities are pursuing multiple leads. “We will find out who is responsible, and we will hold them accountable,” he stated. “This community deserves answers, and we intend to provide them.”
Victims’ families are grieving deeply, remembering their loved ones as vibrant and full of promise.
Tatayana Penister, 24, was described by loved ones as a bright and caring young woman who was actively involved in youth mentoring programs and loved spending time with her nieces and nephews. Her mother, Angela Penister, spoke briefly at the press conference, saying, “Tatayana had a heart of gold. She was just beginning her life, and it’s been stolen from her — from all of us.”
Demetrius Feemster, 23, was remembered by friends as a music enthusiast and aspiring entrepreneur who had recently returned to Little Rock to be closer to his family. “He was the kind of person who brought people together,” said longtime friend Malik Jones. “He didn’t deserve this.”
Of the nine others injured, police confirmed that several remain hospitalized, with at least two individuals in critical condition. The identities of the surviving victims have not yet been released due to privacy concerns.
In response to the tragedy, Conway city officials are increasing patrols at public parks and evaluating community safety measures. Mayor Bart Castleberry issued a statement expressing grief and pledging full support to law enforcement efforts. “Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this tragedy. We stand together as a city in mourning — and in action.”
The Conway Police Department is urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. They’ve established a dedicated tip line and are offering anonymity for those who may fear retaliation.
